
Do you know a deserving gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or queer, high school senior or college student? Spread the word that PFLAG Lubbock is offering the Lola Marie Drew Scholarship to an outstanding student who will be or is attending any college or university in the South Plains area.

We give this scholarship to recognize outstanding gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+) and ally students from our community. We feel it is important to encourage the continuing education of self-identified LGTBQ+ students, and we hope to foster a positive image of LGTBQ+ young people in society.
Requirements
- Applicant must be 18 years or older as of August 1 in the year of the award.
- Preference is given to those currently living in the greater Lubbock area; however, we do not restrict applicants based on the location of their post-secondary educational institution.
- This award is not restricted to students of a particular sexual orientation or gender identity; LGBTQ+ students and Allies are all welcome to apply.
- Previous winners may reapply, however, cannot win this award in back-to-back years.
- If your full tuition and fees are being paid by grants or other funding, you are not eligible for this scholarship.
- Most recent post-secondary transcripts (can be unofficial)
- Two letters of recommendation
- A signed copy of the scholarship recipient agreement (attach to the application)
- A resume

- Quality of application essays
- Strength of recommendation letters
- Demonstration of integrity/honesty
- Determination and potential to achieve goals
- Demonstration of financial need

Who was Lola Marie Drew?
Lola Marie Drew (1907-1996), was the Associate Professor Emeritus of Home Management at Texas Tech University and the Home Management House Supervisor for the School of Home Economics, later the College of Human Sciences. She was born on April 20, 1907, in Livingston, Texas.
She received a BS degree from Texas Women’s University in 1928, earned an MS degree from Columbia University in 1940, and did graduate work at SMU, the University of Texas, Colorado State University, Iowa State University, and Ohio State University. She taught home economics in Texas public schools from 1928 until 1940. Miss Drew taught at the university level at Georgia State University, New York State University, and for 26 years, at Texas Tech University until retiring in 1972.
She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, the AHEA, the THEA, AAUW, and YWCA. Funeral services for Miss Drew were held May 22, 1996, at the W.W. Rix Chapel, with the Rev. Ted Dotts and the Rev. Bobb McMillan officiating. Graveside services were held on May 25 at Forest Hill Cemetery, Livingston, TX.
